The whole purpose of a fridge is to keep food safe and minimise the chances of bacteria and mould growth. In our busy lifestyles we fill our fridges with fresh produce, store leftovers and all sorts of half eaten meals, raw meats, half empty containers of yoghurts, milk etc, etc. It would seem a good idea to keep our fridges clean and free from bacteria growth to keep our food safe. One of the most important things is to make sure your fridge is set at the correct temperature, for home fridges it is between 0oC and 5oC, so that bacteria has less of a chance to multiply, like they do in their thousands. Some activities including meal times, putting groceries away and parties can cause some fridges’ temperature to stay above safe levels for long periods. So make sure your close the door quickly, avoid overloading a fridge, check the fridge temperature is at 5°C or below and have a well insulated, efficient fridge with door seals in good condition.
It is also important to remember that when you are cleaning your fridge, you will have the door open for an extended period of time, so it will take the fridge time to get back to the desired temperature. Make sure you clean all your drawers and shelves with hot soapy water. You can add a couple of drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil for its anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic properties. Then add a couple of drops of Lemon, Orange, Lime, Grapefruit or Bergamot Essential Oil onto a clean damp cloth and wipe over all of the inside of the fridge. This will help deodorise and prevents odours from penetrating other foods.
