Let’s start with a shout out to menthol crystals. These little shards of pure menthol goodness are naturally created in the secretory glands of the Mentha arvensis plant. They are soluble in other essential oils, water, alcohol or carrier oils so can be easily dissolved into many recipes. Menthol can be used in numerous medicinal recipes to help ease blocked sinuses, colds and respiratory infections or help soothe headaches and lift your mood. It can be added to hair products and used to help clear dandruff stimulate the scalp or added to a muscle rub to assist with muscular aches and pains. You could make a quick and easy muscle or chest rub by melting down 1/4 tsp of menthol crystals into 100ml of our balm base and adding a few drops of eucalyptus.
Our favourite idea by far though, is shower steamers. We are deep in cold and flu season now and there is nothing better than stepping into a hot steamy shower filled with therapeutic essential oils that can help decongest the tubes and relieve a heavy head.
This recipe was inspired by a tutorial by Emillie Lefler we found on YouTube. They are similar to bath bombs so for this you will need to start with some sort of mould. Chocolate moulds, ice cube trays, wax melt or bath bomb moulds are all great options.
Firstly weigh out into a glass jug and mix together:
35g Menthol Crystals.
30g Perfumers or Rubbing Alcohol/Ethanol
5g Polysorbate 80
15g Essential oils. (Eucalyptus, Tea tree, Lavender and Rosemary) You can choose the blend ratios.
Leave for approx. 30mins, stirring regularly until crystals have dissolved.
In a glass bowl, whisk together until smooth:
450g Sodium Bicarbonate (Bicarb)
50g White Kaolin Clay
Thoroughly whisk in your liquid mixture and continue to whisk while you slowly add:
225g Citric Acid
Squeeze your mix together to make sure you can form clumps that stick together. If it’s too dry add a drop more alcohol.
Then push into your moulds and leave it over night to dry. Push them out and they are ready to be placed around the edge of your shower floor for the ultimate inhalation. Ahhhh!
