Flaxseed oil and linseed oil are two names for the same oil, cold pressed from the seed of Linum usitatissimum. Range Products supplies it 100% natural and unrefined, with no GMOs or artificial additives, in sizes from 100ml up to 5L. It is best known for being high in alpha linolenic acid, an omega 3 fatty acid, and for being a drying oil, which is why the same oil turns up both in nutrition and in traditional wood finishing and paint making. • Skincare formulating: Used in the oil phase of balms and body oils. Flaxseed oil oxidises faster than most carrier oils, so use it as part of a blend and make small batches.
• Timber and woodcare: Linseed oil is the traditional finish for timber, tool handles and workbenches. Note that this is raw cold pressed oil, not boiled linseed oil, so it cures slowly.
• Paint, putty and artists’ media: Linseed oil is the classic binder in oil paint, glazing putty and oil based artists’ media.
• Food use: Cold pressed flaxseed oil is used cold, in dressings and smoothies rather than for cooking, because heat degrades it quickly.
• Storage matters: Keep it refrigerated once opened and use it within a few months, since it goes rancid faster than most oils.
