About Frankincense Commercial Essential Oil (Boswellia serrata)

Frankincense commercial essential oil is steam distilled from the resin of Boswellia serrata, the Indian frankincense tree. It has a warm, resinous aroma with soft citrus and woody edges, and it sits as a base note in blending, which means it lingers and anchors the lighter oils around it. Range Products supplies it 100% pure and natural, with nothing added and nothing extended, in sizes from 50ml up to 1kg for aromatherapy, perfumery, soap and candle making. We deliver Australia wide and offer pickup from our Welshpool WA store.

Benefits

  • 100% pure and natural, steam distilled from Boswellia serrata resin with no fillers, extenders or synthetic additives.
  • A warm, resinous, softly woody aroma that works as a base note in perfumery and aromatherapy blending.
  • Long lasting in blends, so it holds a fragrance together in soap, candles and diffuser mixes.
  • Commercial grade and priced for volume use, in sizes from 50ml up to 1kg.
  • Blends readily with myrrh, sandalwood, lavender, bergamot and lemon.
  • Supplied in amber glass under 500ml and alloy canisters above, to keep light off the oil.

How to Use

  • Diffusion: Add 3 to 4 drops to a diffuser. Frankincense is often blended with citrus oils to lift its resinous base.
  • Topical blending: Always dilute in a carrier oil before applying to skin. A common starting point is 2 to 3 drops per tablespoon of carrier.
  • Soap and candle making: Use as a fragrance component. As a base note it holds its scent through the process better than lighter top notes.
  • Perfumery: Use as a base note to anchor a blend and give it depth and staying power.
  • Safety: Keep away from eyes and sensitive areas, keep out of reach of children, and do not ingest. Patch test diluted oil before wider skin use. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under medical care, speak to a healthcare professional before use.

FAQs

What does frankincense essential oil smell like?

It has a warm, resinous aroma with soft woody and faintly citrus edges. It is a base note, so it is deeper and slower to evaporate than oils such as lemon or eucalyptus, and it lingers in a blend.

Which frankincense species is this?

This is Boswellia serrata, also called Indian frankincense. It is a different species from Boswellia carterii, which we also stock, and the two differ slightly in aroma.

Is this a therapeutic grade frankincense oil?

There is no official standard behind the phrase therapeutic grade. It is a marketing term rather than a certification, and no independent body issues it. What we can tell you is what the oil actually is: 100% pure Boswellia serrata resin oil, steam distilled, with no fillers, extenders or synthetic additives.

Can I put frankincense oil directly on my skin?

No. Dilute it in a carrier oil first, at around 2 to 3 drops per tablespoon of carrier, and patch test before wider use. Undiluted essential oils can irritate the skin.

What does frankincense blend well with?

It blends readily with myrrh, sandalwood, lavender, bergamot and lemon. As a base note it works well underneath brighter citrus and floral top notes.

How should I store frankincense essential oil?

Keep it tightly sealed in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Stored properly, essential oils generally keep for about two to three years.
