Product Information

About Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves of Pogostemon cablin, a bushy herb in the mint family grown across Southeast Asia. Its aroma is deep, earthy and sweet with a woody, almost musty richness, and it is one of the strongest base notes in perfumery. Patchouli is also unusual in that it improves with age, so a well stored bottle gets smoother and rounder over time. Range Products supplies it 100% pure and natural from Indonesia, in sizes from 50ml up to 5kg for perfumery, soap and candle making and aromatherapy blending. We deliver Australia wide with pickup from our Welshpool WA store.

Benefits

  • 100% pure and natural, steam distilled from Indonesian Pogostemon cablin leaves, with no additives or synthetic fillers.
  • A deep, earthy, sweet and woody aroma that is instantly recognisable.
  • One of the strongest base notes available, so it anchors a blend and makes lighter oils last longer.
  • Improves with age, unlike most essential oils, becoming smoother and mellower over time.
  • Holds its scent well through soap and candle making.
  • Available from 50ml up to 5kg, supplied in amber glass under 500ml and alloy canisters above.

How to Use

  • Perfumery: Use as a base note. Patchouli is a classic fixative, which means it slows the evaporation of the lighter oils blended with it.
  • Soap and candle making: Add at your usual fragrance load. Its heavy base note holds up well through cold process soap and through a candle burn.
  • Diffusion: Add 3 to 4 drops to a diffuser. Patchouli is strong, so start with less than you would use of a lighter oil.
  • Topical blending: Dilute in a carrier oil before skin use, at around 2 to 3 drops per tablespoon of carrier, and patch test first.
  • Blends well with: sandalwood, vetiver, frankincense, bergamot, lavender, rose and geranium.
  • Safety: Keep away from eyes, do not ingest, and keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under medical care, speak to a healthcare professional before use.

FAQs

What does patchouli essential oil smell like?

Patchouli has a deep, earthy and sweet aroma with a woody, slightly musty richness. It is heavy and long lasting rather than bright or fresh, which is why it sits at the base of a blend.

Why is patchouli oil dark in colour?

Steam distilled patchouli is naturally amber to dark brown. The colour deepens as the oil ages, which is normal and is not a sign that anything is wrong with it.

Does patchouli oil improve with age?

Yes. Patchouli is one of the few essential oils that gets better with time. As it ages the aroma becomes smoother and rounder, and the sharper edges settle down.

Is your patchouli oil organic?

It is not certified organic, so we do not sell it as an organic patchouli oil. It is 100% pure and natural, steam distilled from Pogostemon cablin leaves grown in Indonesia, with no additives or synthetic fillers.

What does patchouli blend well with?

It works well with sandalwood, vetiver, frankincense, bergamot, lavender, rose and geranium. As a base note and fixative it also helps lighter oils in a blend last longer.

Do you sell patchouli essential oil in bulk?

Yes. We stock 50ml, 100ml, 500ml, 1kg and 5kg sizes, so it suits everything from small batch makers to production runs, with delivery Australia wide and pickup from our Welshpool WA store.
