Is rosehip oil good for oily or acne-prone skin?

Rosehip is a light, dry oil that sits low on the comedogenic scale, so many people with oily and combination skin use it on the face without trouble. As with any oil, patch test first if your skin is very breakout-prone.

Why is rosehip oil orange, and will it stain?

The golden to amber-orange colour is natural and comes from the seed oil itself, not from any additive. Used in the small amounts you would apply to skin it absorbs cleanly, but take the usual care with light-coloured fabrics until it has soaked in.

What does rosehip oil smell like?

It has a mild, characteristic earthy and slightly nutty scent. This is normal for pure, cold pressed rosehip and is not a sign that the oil has turned. A sharp or sour smell is the sign to discard it.

What is the difference between Rosa canina and Rosa rubiginosa rosehip oil?

Both are sold as rosehip oil and behave similarly in skincare. They come from two different rose species, with Rosa rubiginosa sometimes labelled rosa mosqueta. This oil is Rosa canina.

Is this rosehip oil cold pressed or refined?

It is cold pressed, which keeps the oil in its natural virgin state without heat or chemical refining. That is why it keeps its golden colour and characteristic scent.

How long does rosehip oil last, and should I refrigerate it?

Rosehip is high in delicate fatty acids, so it oxidises faster than many oils. Stored cool, dark and sealed it generally keeps for around six to twelve months, and refrigeration helps it last longer. Discard it if the smell turns sharp or rancid.
