Forget those expensive dishwasher cleaners! This is a great tip for a natural way to keep your dishwasher looking sparkling and smelling fresh.

Empty your dishwasher of all items. Then add 3 tablespoons of citric acid to the detergent dispenser (or as much as will fit if it’s small) and 4 drops of Lemon essential oil. Run your dishwasher on a short, hot cycle and let their natural cleaning abilities shine. Citric acid is an excellent disinfectant and deodoriser, it also contains d’limonene, a great natural solvent which will cut through grease and grime while still being gentle on the inside of your machine. The lemon oil will act in a similar way, killing germs and removing dirt while at the same time leaving behind a lovely fresh smell.

Doing this once a month is a cheap, eco-friendly way of ensuring that your dishwasher will clean better, last longer and remain a germ free zone.

Winter is upon us and coughs and colds are rapidly spreading through schools, so it’s important to remind our little people to regularly wash their hands. They need even more encouragement to put their hands under cold water on a chilly day and many of us know how repetitive it can become. So here is an idea that may make the journey to the sink that little bit easier. This recipe adds the nourishing benefit of Jojoba oil and shea butter, with the gentle cleaning properties of Lavender and Mandarin essential oils. Topped off with a little surprise incentive.

Take a 1Kg tub of clear melt and pour soap. Cut it into cubes and divide it 2 piles,1 with 300g of soap cubes and 1 with 700g.

Put the 300g pile into a glass bowl and either place over a pan of boiling water or put into the microwave. Stir regularly until melted. Do not boil. Remove from heat and allow to cool before adding 6g Jojoba Oil and 5ml Lavender essential oil.

Fill your chosen mould about a quarter of the way up, allow the bubbles to rise to the surface and lightly mist spray them with a tiny bit of denatured ethanol to remove. Leave for approx 45mins to allow it to set firm. Then place your chosen treat, such as a plastic toy or a coin into the centre of the mould on top of the layer of set soap.

In a fresh bowl add the other 700g pile of soap cubes, 8g shea butter and 2-3drops food colouring (optional). As before, gently heat until just melted stirring regularly. Allow to cool and add 5ml Mandarin oil. Carefully pour into your mould until the treat is completely covered and again spray the bubbles at the top with the denatured ethanol. Leave to set (4-6hrs). Once hard, pop them out of the mould and admire the result. Then simply leave a soap bar in the bathroom and wait for the hand washing fun to begin.

Added oils or butters can be changed depending on your personal preference and it’s so easy to make you could even get the kids to help!

This time of year brings cold temperatures and wet weather, which in turn can bring damp, mould, mildew and musty odours into homes. Often found lurking at the back of wardrobes, around windows and rooms that aren’t used too often, it can spread quickly and be hard to get rid of. In this situation activated charcoal could be your best friend! There’s nothing it loves more than sucking up and trapping unwanted moisture and odour.
So here is an easy way to make activated charcoal absorbers for your home. All you need is a small cotton bag, some activated charcoal, a paper coffee filter and your favourite essential oil.
Firstly, clear everything away from your workspace and get an apron or old clothes. Charcoal powder can get messy!
Drip a few drops of your chosen essential oil onto the outside of the coffee filter and then fill it with activated charcoal leaving room to fold over the top as tightly as you can to prevent any from escaping.
Pop your little charcoal parcel into the cotton bag and seal the top, either by tying it neatly or sewing it if you are feeling handy.
For larger bags you can either add multiple charcoal parcels, or, if you are feeling brave, put a small square of paper towel with essential oil on it into the bottom of the bag and pour the charcoal straight in without using coffee filters and sew it/glue it/ tie it up tight.
Once complete it can be hung in wardrobes or on door handles, or simply placed on any surface and it is ready to do its job!

Labels and stickers can be tough to get off. Whether it’s for reusing a jar or bottle, an unwanted logo, or removing a sticker that has been lovingly added to your furniture by a thoughtful little person, most of us have had the odd occasion where we have tried to remove a sticker, only to be left to tackle the sticky mess beneath. For many of us, eucalyptus oil is our go to in this situation. It dissolves the glue quickly and effectively. But what about those times when you need something a little less pungent and a little more gentle on varnished or delicate surfaces? Well here is our tip for you….Remove as much of the label as you can first, either by soaking it in water or rubbing it with a damp sponge. Next, put 1tblsp of Coconut oil into a small bowl. If it is solid put it in the microwave for about 10-15secs until it is warm and melting. Add 1tblsp Bicarb Soda to the oil and mix it into a thick paste. Then, take a warm cloth or rag and rub it over the area until all the glue is removed. It will take a little longer this way than using eucalyptus oil but at least it is food safe and won’t leave behind a strong smell or damaged surfaces.
